Storing Up Treasure
Study Passage Matthew 6:19-23
1. People often talk about their religious life and their secular life. Briefly discuss what they might mean by this and then whether there should be any difference in our behavior in these two areas of our lives. 2. Discuss the various ways that people store up for themselves treasures on earth.
3. In this sermon Wesley takes the opportunity of discussing what is permissible as far as storing up treasure (i.e. earning a living) goes and what is not permissible. Discuss what is permissible, and then discuss what is not permissible.
4. List some of the potential dangers inherent in treasure.
5. Is it true that your heart follows your treasure? List some destructive examples of this, and then list some positive examples of this phenomenon.
6. Discuss various ways of building up treasure in Heaven.
7. Read Proverbs 19:17 in as many different translations as possible. Does this verse contain useful investment advice? Discuss the full implications of believing and living the truth contained in this verse.
8. Read Matthew 6:22 in as many different translations as possible. What does it mean for your eye to be “single”?
9. What does the text before us say about our ambitions, our hopes and our goals?
