Data uncovered by the Liberal Democrats using the Freedom of Information Act revealed that three clinical commissioning groups in Manchester alone have had to spend almost £2 million over the past five years on surgery required as a result of the injections. Campaigners warn that the figures suggest a national bill of as much as £1 million a year.

It is currently legal for beauticians with limited or no medical training to administer the anti-wrinkle injections. Tim Farron, the Lib Dem leader, proposed a “Botox Bill” to “make sure the rare, few bad practices are stamped out”.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Health urged people seeking treatment to find reputable, qualified practitioners and said the department was working to improve training and qualifications.
